The updated automatic that replaced the E4OD for the 1999 Super Duty, paired exclusively with the 7.3L Power Stroke; the 6.0L that followed for 2003 used the new 5R110 TorqShift instead.
Strengths
- Key upgrades over the E4OD included a pulse-width-modulated torque converter clutch solenoid, an output speed sensor, and a redesigned oil pump, aimed at improving efficiency and reliability over its predecessor.
Known weaknesses
Shares the E4OD's core design and several of its weak points, including converter clutch shudder and sensitivity to sensor faults, since it is an evolution of that transmission rather than a clean-sheet design.
