Ford 5R110W TorqShift 5-Speed Automatic

Paired with: Ford F-250/F-350 Super Duty, 6.0L and 6.4L Power Stroke

Introduced with the 6.0L Power Stroke for the 2003 model year and carried through the 6.4L's run, the 5R110 has six physical gear ratios but normally uses five of them: it shifts 1-2-3-5-6 in ordinary conditions, falling back to 1-2-3-4-6 only when transmission fluid is very cold.

Strengths

• Regarded as one of Ford's more durable heavy-duty automatics of its era, with a reputation for surviving significant abuse when properly maintained.
• With the right combination of knowledge, components, and calibration, it can be built into an exceedingly reliable platform for demanding use.

Known weaknesses

• Converter lockup lining failure and shudder are documented issues.

  Note: An upgraded torque converter is a common preventive or corrective upgrade.

• Line pressure instability has been reported.

  Note: Address via valve body service or tuning calibrated for the transmission.

• Pump wear, front seal leaks, and fluid contamination occur; a failing torque converter can send contaminants that score the pump body and gears, causing internal leaks and dropping line pressure.

  Note: Diagnose and replace the converter and pump together if contamination is found, rather than the pump alone.
