A genuinely heavy-duty 5-speed used by both Dodge/Ram and GM behind their diesels through the early 2000s, replacing lighter-duty manuals from each brand. It has a strong reputation among diesel manuals, with one well-known but manageable weak point.
Strengths
- Light weight and short case length relative to its strength; carbon-fiber composite dual-cone synchronizers were advanced for its era.
- Widely described as rugged and dependable, and shared across two manufacturers' HD diesel trucks, which kept parts and expertise common.
Known weaknesses
The 5th gear lock nut has a known tendency to back off, especially from lugging the engine in 5th gear at low speed under heavy load (e.g. towing).
Note: A common, well-documented aftermarket fix exists (upgraded lock nut/retention kits); address it before it leaves the transmission inoperable in 5th.
