Simplified torque-flow diagram — where this transmission sits in the drivetrain, not a literal cutaway of its internals.
A heavy, close-ratio 6-speed built specifically for the Cummins' torque, replacing the NV4500 as the top manual option. Early units (approximately 1998.5 through 2000) had known synchronizer and input-shaft weaknesses that Chrysler addressed with an updated clutch, input shaft, and synchro design for the 2001 model year.
Strengths
- Purpose-built for diesel torque rather than adapted from a gas application, with a reputation as one of the stronger manuals of its era once past the early-production issues.
- The 2001-and-later revision addressed the input shaft and synchro weaknesses of the earliest units.
Known weaknesses
Early production (roughly model-year 1998.5 through 2000) units are known for synchronizer problems and a weaker input shaft.
Note: Later (2001+) revised units, or an upgraded aftermarket input shaft on an early one, address this.
5th gear synchro wear is a documented ongoing issue across the production run.
Note: Watch for grinding on 5th and address synchro wear before it worsens.
Shifting feels heavy and notchy compared to a car transmission; the truck's own community describes it as closer to a heavy-truck gearbox, and driving it without double-clutching at the right rpm causes grinding that owners can mistake for a defect.
Note: Learn to double-clutch; it is largely a driving-technique issue, not a fault, once the truck is otherwise in good order.
Requires a specific 5W-30 synchromesh-rated gear oil; using the wrong fluid accelerates synchro wear.
Note: Use only the specified fluid type.
