Simplified torque-flow diagram — where this transmission sits in the drivetrain, not a literal cutaway of its internals.
A heavy-duty 6-speed built specifically for high-torque pickups, used by both Ford (behind the 7.3L Super Duty) and GM (behind the early Duramax) before each brand moved to its next-generation manual or automatic-only lineup.
Strengths
- Purpose-designed for high-torque trucks: synchronized in every gear, with dual-cone synchronizers on 2nd and 3rd for durability, high-helix-angle gearsets for quiet operation, and a lightweight integrated aluminum housing with center bearing support.
- A single-mass flywheel (as used in Power Stroke applications) is a simpler, generally more reliable design than a dual-mass flywheel.
Known weaknesses
Owners report noise, slippage, chatter, and hard shifting on some units.
Note: Diagnose against the known issues below before assuming a full rebuild is needed.
Cold-shift difficulty has been reported by some owners.
Note: Allow the transmission to warm before hard use in cold weather.
Ford switched the specified fluid to a full-synthetic 75W-90 (Ford XT-M5) starting in 2008; using an incorrect fluid on any year is linked to shifting problems.
Note: Use the fluid specification for the truck's model year.
